The most prevalent issues while sanding a car are connected to sandpaper grain. Since the automotive industry has many types of sanding applications, the job requires different grits of sandpaper. So, if you want to avoid paint and surface damage on your vehicle, make sure to use the appropriate grit of sandpaper for car paint. First, we’ll discuss what it takes to get the job done, and then I’ll give you the details of the sanding process. Finally, we can get into the esoteric aspects of body finishing and sanding.
The whole process of the auto sanding includes the damage assessment of the car surface, old paint removal, plastic repair, feather edge sanding, epoxy primer spraying, scraping sheet metal ash, sanding sheet metal ash, halfway primer spraying, sanding halfway primer, varnish spraying, and finally polishing. Next, I’ll use our usual procedure as an example:
Step 1 – Sand The Paint
If the original paint is still good, sand it using 120/180 grit abrasive sand paper or wire brush to romove. This may sometimes be used to sand an automobile down to bare metal without digging up the metal surface. Hand sanding is feasible at this point, but it will be less smooth and will take hours rather than the 30 minutes it takes to sand the car using a sander.
Step 2 – Apply The Putty To Surface
Clean the surface, it’s around 3 minutes. And then apply the putty to surface which is to fix, it will take 5-10 minutes to let the putty dry, any putty which uses 3% of 100 gram hardener. Using the short end and sliding the block from side to side might result in gutters in the fill that are not visible until the final paint has dried.
Step 3 – Sand The Putty
After the putty has cured, sand the putty using 180-240 medium grit sandpaper on the sanding block. Sand with the same approach as you did with the last grit. The putty should be softly sanded, removing only the top layer. Too much sanding can expose the metal and cause low places in the putty.
Step 4 – Sand The Filler
Use 400-500 sandpaper grits sand filler, the sanding time depends on how big the area is. Next, apply base-coat, it depends on material, I’ll take what I’m using as an example: there are 2 kinds of material one is 1 wet coat + 0.5 coats of effect at axalta, the other is 0.5 coats + 1 wet coat + 0.5 effect coat at PPG. It will takes 15-20minutes to let the base-coat dry.
Step 5 – Apply Clear-Coat
Apply clear-coat, it depends on material which 2 coats wait 30-35 minutes for drying with warm air because the clear-coat is water based. If there is orange peel, you could use P1500/2000/3000/6000 high grit sandpaper to sand around 2 minutes.
It takes a lot of time and skill to work on a painted surface before a perfect paint job, you’ll need variety time spent on prepainting surface, so hopefully these tips can help you! You can choose suitable products according to different usage scenarios. It is better to use dry sanding paper for wood works.
