Coated abrasives, also known as flexible abrasives, are products that consist of a thin layer of abrasive grain attached to a substrate.Those are most used as substrate for coated abrasives:

The substrate also called as backing and can have varying degrees of flexibility ranging from extremely flexible (E weight cotton backings) to extremely sturdy (Z weight polyester backings).The backing gives the abrasive very specific grip and adhesion, stretch, tear resistance, tensile strength, flexibility and stability properties. Classification of paper bases
Paper-backed abrasives (i.e. traditional sandpaper) are the most affordable abrasives. Specialized technical papers are used as substrates for coated abrasives. Paper backings come in different paper weights, designated by letters, are available for different applications. The A to C weight categories are best suited for hand sanding and for use with pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) or hook-and-loop discs, while D to E are flexible enough to be used with stroke or wide belts.
The following is a classification of paper bases named by letters.
- “A” This is light weights and highly flexible. The light 80-90g paper is primarily used in finishing operations where fine grits are required.
- “C” Weight – This medium light120-140g paper is used when some pliability and strength are required. It can be used in folded or flat areas and is ideal for cabinetwork. This backing is available in fine to medium grits.
- “D” Weight – This medium heavy 150-180g paper is available in medium and coarse grits.
- “E” Weight – This strong 200g-250g paper is used for belts, discs, rolls and very coarse sheets.
- “F” Weight – This 270g paper is used for narrow and wide belts, metal and crankshaft polishing rolls, and sanding paper for wood
